What are the first steps to creating your Client Attracting Quiz???
So many people have asked me about quiz creation, that I finally caved and created this quick step-by-step walkthrough.
1. Begin with the end in mind
The most effective quizzes and assessments do two things:
First, they allow the person taking them to gain insight into their own lives, who they’re being, what they’re prone to, what the best plan forward might be, or a new perspective they’d be smart to be aware of.
Second, it allows you to segment your people into different buckets so that you can interact with them on the back end more directly. For example, if I segment people into ‘beginning in business’ and ‘already established’, I would then send them content and material relevant to where they are, rather than generic content that goes out the same to everyone.
They require different kinds of support, and they are more likely to invest in different solutions.
Action: Plan your buckets, and look for the different ways you can inform someone about their ‘type’. Wether that’s their personality, an archetype, their level of expansion, their innate gifts/strengths, their body/health aspirations or stuck points… or whatever is directly about YOUR work. The title of the quiz will come once you’ve distinguished the end points.
2. Get clear on the next step
This could be a mini-course, a collection of done-for-you templates, a video series that supports them specifically after learning more about themselves through your quiz, a group program, a consultation, a deep dive into more information about their type, a book…. I could go on.
The question to ask is, “What is the perfect complementary invitation to someone who ends the quiz with ___ information about themselves?” This should be relevant to the quiz/assessment result, relevant to your work, whether group, self-guided, or one-on-one, and an EASY “Yes!”, after everything they’ve just learned and received from you.
Action: Brainstorm some next steps to offer after your Quiz: perhaps a low cost easy-yes, $9, $17, $47. And then perhaps the more complete solution that would follow the bite-sized easy-yes, like a package of sessions with you, a 6 week course, or a larger commitment.
3. Come up with the questions
A general rule (from the pros in this industry) is to keep it between 3 and 9 questions. This is enough to gain insights about a person, while still keeping it short enough that most folks will reach the end.
Action: Come up with 8-12 possible questions, and then weed out the ones that are redundant, and those not actively pointing to a specific end result, or to a segmentation bucket that you want to keep in mind. i.e. age, demographic, revenue level, biggest challenge, etc. Buckets allow you to interact with different segments of your list differently depending on where they are in their trajectory.
4. Invite and Deliver
At what point will a person opt-in (enter their name and email to be added to your list)? This can happen before they see their results (this is called a Squeeze page) or on the result page itself, asking if they’d like the full report on their result.
Via email, and/or on the page following the opt-in, they should gain access to whatever information you promised. The email AND thank you page are also an opportunity to invite them to the next step.
That next step invitation could be as simple as short copy and a button to buy/schedule OR it could be a 1-3+ minute video making a case for them buying/scheduling/taking that next step.
Action: Draw yourself a simple flow chart showing you what information will be going where, so you can be sure to fill all the gaps when it comes to getting the participant onto your list and nurturing them to take the next step with you.
5. Consider fostering the hesitant folks
One of the biggest missed opportunities I see in my work with clients is that they don’t take the time to ‘wine and dine’ their new list members. What could you set up, via email, video, blog curating, or group setting that would nurture your fabulous new friends down the road of ‘getting to know you’ until they’re ready to take the leap and INVEST in your next step.
Note: This may be more ‘Hot Tips’ oriented, and less ‘Keep Blasting an Offer.’
Action: Follow up: Set up a system to nurture and date your people like you’re falling in love with them. (So they have a chance to fall in love with you.)
6. Choose a platform
Quiz software can be expensive and annoying to figure out. I LOVE Bucket.io, and it is also more robust than most people will need right away.
When I made my first quiz I used Thrive Themes Quiz Builder which is a one time purchase plugin for those hosting their websites on WordPress. I switched to Bucket because I wanted to do more fancy segmenting of my list.
You could also of course, build your quiz on a more basic software and if you see it converting into clients, cash, and clout, then decide to up-level it to a fancier platform.
Action: Do some research on platforms. Bucket.io, Thrive Themes, Qzzr, are a few I know work great. You can google alternatives to these as well.
7. Build it, Test it, Launch it.
Once you have a platform then you need to go about plugging in your fancy title, your beautiful, mindful quiz questions, results pages, AND opt in forms.
Then you’ll need to make sure that your email list is connected to the quiz so that folks entering their info receive what you’ve promised them via email. (And that they’re getting onto your list, duh.)
You’ll want to make sure any next step copy or videos have been placed properly on the results pages and then TEST IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT!
Take yourself through the quiz as many times as necessary, trying to make yourself reach each different end point, and opting in to make sure you both, land on the page you’re supposed to, and receive the email follow up you’ve set up for that result.
Fancy trick: If you’re wanting to opt-in to things multiple times you can use +1, +2, or +35 (any number will work) before the @ symbol with your gmail account. Example: email+1@gmail.com
Another fancy trick: Use Canva.com to make a beautiful image with text as your logo for the quiz. That way when people share it on social media it will look like something pretty, fun, engaging and draw more folks in.
Action: Build something beautiful! Make it fun for your people to get to know you! Remember this is a game you’re making for your potential clients, it should be a contribution in their world, and there is no deadline. Take your time and try to enjoy the process.
